Ensuring medication safety during pregnancy remains a well-known issue in pharmacology. Despite almost 90% of pregnant women taking medications, only around 10% of approved drugs have been specifically tested for safety in pregnant women. The placental transfer potential of many substances remains unclear, increasing the risk of unexpected side effects.

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration Bayer’s Consumer Health Division, MPSlabs (part of ESQlabs), Dynamic42 GmbH and Placenta Lab of Jena University Hospital have developed an organ-on-chip platform and interactive computational software to understand whether small molecules can cross the blood-placenta-barrier in pregnant women.

Within this webinar:

/ Katja Graf from Dynamic42 will give detailed insight into the development of the intestine-liver-placenta on-chip model

/ Christian Maas will show how digital twin technology accurately captures the pharmacokinetics of the individual on-chip models

/ Both show results for an example of Prednisone as a commonly prescribed corticosteroid during pregnancy
