Despite being essential for almost every medical field, animal testing has become a concerning practice because of serious ethical considerations, rising costs, and biological limitations. Organ-on-Chip technologies are therefore shaping up to be a promising alternative to animal models – especially for drug testing.

In this DiagnosTech-Lecture the InfectoGnostics partner Dynamic42 will give a thorough introduction to the field of organ-on-chip and microphysiological systems. The main emphasis of the lecture will be on the biological systems that can already be modelled with organ-on-chip technologies. The Dynamic42 experts will present case studies demonstrating how some models can already outperform animal experimentation.

Additionally, the limitations of organ-on-chip technology will be discussed, while showing where they can still complement existing methods and thus reduce the dependence on animal models in order to align with the principles of the 3R strategy: replace, reduce, and refine animal use.
