Press Release | Dynamic42 closes a critical gap in organ-on-chip research by embedding oxygen sensing

The DynamicOrgan® O Sensor Kit enables continuous, non-invasive monitoring of oxygen levels for human-relevant disease and drug models.

Jena, February 4, 2026. Dynamic42 GmbH, a German developer of advanced human organ-on-chip technologies, today announces the launch of its DynamicOrgan® O Sensor Kit. The Jena-based company will debut its first fully integrated organ-on-chip solution with non-invasive, real-time oxygen measurement at the SLAS 2026 International Conference & Exhibition, taking place from February 7–11, 2026, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Although oxygen profoundly influences cellular metabolism, disease progression, infection dynamics and drug response, it remains one of the least directly measured parameters in complex in vitro models. This disconnect has long limited the interpretability of advanced disease and drug studies. With the DynamicOrgan® O₂ Sensor Kit, the German organ-on-chip specialists directly address this challenge by embedding oxygen sensing into the organ-on-chip environment itself, enabling continuous, non-invasive monitoring under physiologically relevant conditions.

The integrated sensing capability of the biochip allows for precise environmental control within the system. For academic researchers, the O₂ Sensor Kit facilitates in-depth investigations into oxygen-dependent disease mechanisms, including tumor hypoxia and respiratory diseases like COPD. Additionally, the system enables the verification of anaerobic or hypoxic conditions in models or disease states characterized by altered oxygen availability. In the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, the kit offers time-resolved oxygen data under perfused conditions, enabling the detection of compound effects earlier and the analysis of dynamic responses beyond traditional endpoint measurements.

“Understanding biology means understanding oxygen. We are pleased to offer the first fully integrated, ready-to-use oxygen-sensing solutions for organ-on-chip research, setting a new standard by eliminating the need for custom sensor integration or external measurement setups,” says Dr. Lara Thieme, Senior Scientist, Dynamic42.

Optical oxygen sensors were integrated in the Dynamic42 Organ-on-Chip system by PyroScience, a specialist in high-precision optical sensor solutions for life science research, in close collaboration with Dynamic42. The measurement of oxygen levels is based on PyroScience’s well established REDFLASH sensor technology. The REDFLASH technology allows continuous contactless oxygen measurements over prolonged timespans in miniaturized systems using luminescent lifetime measurement. This optical sensing approach minimizes interference with the biological model while providing stable, reproducible read-outs under varying experimental conditions.

Biochips with integrated sensors are simply placed on top of the FirePlate-O2 system including an adapted holder to keep the chips in position. This allows for a robust, contactless read-out while the chips are placed on the FirePlate-O2 while enabling easy access of the biochips if necessary.

“We are pleased that our collaboration with Dynamic42 gives users in the organ-on-chip field easy access to our miniaturized oxygen sensors, eliminating the need for system development. Oxygen sensing allows to further unlock the potential of organ-on-chip – an application area with enormous potential for future biomedical research,” says Dr. Stefanie Fuchs, Application Scientist, PyroScience.

The team from Jena will present the DynamicOrgan® O₂-Sensor Kit live at SLAS 2026, where visitors can explore its technical capabilities, system integration and application scenarios in detail.
